Oakley has recently made an important discovery: being a young dog is FUN! After starting life unsure of the world and not quite understanding how to just be a dog, Oakley has blossomed into a silly, bouncy, adorably klutzy girl who is learning that life is safe—and there are SO many fun things to do!

Just look at her now! Oakley happily zooms around the yard, plays with her dog friends, and has discovered the joy of toys. She was initially suspicious of tennis balls, but now she happily chases and plays with them. Squeaky toys are also becoming a favorite. She’s not a major chewer, although she does enjoy finding things like slippers and proudly showing them off to her people. Apparently, fashion accessories are more fun than chew toys.

Oakley absolutely loves everyone she meets and greets humans of all ages with a constantly wagging tail. She also loves other dogs and enjoys playing with her foster siblings. Her foster family monitors playtime to make sure things stay safe, especially because one of her dog friends enjoys playing rough. Oakley is still catching up physically after arriving very underweight, so a little extra supervision is important while she builds strength.

When she’s not busy being a goofy young dog, Oakley is an excellent snuggle buddy. She loves curling up beside her people, lounging on the couch during TV time, and—her personal favorite—burrowing under the covers. She’s also happy to simply hang out nearby and keep her people company.

Oakley is crate trained and settles nicely when she’s asked to go in, especially with a treat. She can hold it overnight and keeps her crate clean. She’s also learning her basic manners and has started working on “stay.” She takes correction well and is eager to learn.

Oakley is still working on house training and will need frequent potty breaks and continued guidance while she gets the hang of it. She is also understandably very enthusiastic about food after her difficult start, so she can be quite underfoot in the kitchen and currently does best relaxing in her crate while food is being prepared. She does not guard her food, although she is happy to finish her own meal and then see if anyone else has leftovers!

Oakley has come such a long way, and watching her discover toys, snuggles, zoomies, and all the silly things young dogs are supposed to do has been pretty wonderful. She’s affectionate, goofy, gentle, and thrilled to be part of the world. Now she just needs a family ready to help her keep discovering how good life can be!

NOTE ABOUT BREED LABELING: Visual breed identification of dogs is unreliable and usually inaccurate. So, for most of our adoptable pups, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog or puppy as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Please read the following general requirements carefully before submitting an adoption application. While this criteria is our typical standard, we understand all situations are unique! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel you meet one of these bullet points – feel free to submit an application anyway, so we can discuss your situation with you.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Submitted applications must be filled out fully and factually.
  • All applicants must reside in the state of Minnesota or its bordering states, unless a special exception has been made. Please email us at info@ruffstartrescue.org if you would like to discuss the potential for an out of state adoption.
  • Consider how you’ll manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. An isolation period would be good for allowing that animal to settle in and learn the routine.
  • Please be aware of any rental/association or homeowners’ insurance restrictions you may have before applying. Such limits may include breed restrictions, number of pets allowed, weight requirements, etc.
  • All adopted animals must live indoors with their families and always be monitored closely when outdoors for their safety (with the exception of working cats).
  • We do not allow any medically-unnecessary surgical procedures, such as declawing; defanging; debarking; or cropping/docking (of tails or ears) to be conducted on any animal adopted from our rescue.
