Helping animals doesn’t always mean bringing them into rescue. Sometimes, the most meaningful support we can provide is helping pets stay safely with the people who already love them.
Ruff Start Rescue works to connect pet owners with food, veterinary care, education, and other resources that can make caring for your pet more manageable.
Financial hardship, unexpected veterinary needs, behavioral challenges or difficulty accessing basic pet supplies can put families in incredibly challenging situations. Whenever possible, we want pet owners to have access to support that helps them continue caring for their animals rather than feeling like surrendering is their only option.
Through our programs, community partnerships, and trusted external resources, we help connect people with food, veterinary care, education, and other pet care resources.
Rooted in rural Minnesota, Ruff Start Rescue remains committed to supporting the communities where our work began. Many of our direct community programs, outreach efforts, and assistance initiatives focus on rural areas, where access to affordable pet care and other resources can be especially limited.
No family should have to consider giving up a pet simply because they are struggling to afford food.
When available, Ruff Start Rescue shares donated pet food and supplies through community giveback efforts and partnerships with local organizations, helping make these essentials more accessible to families who need them. So far in 2026, we have distributed more than 73,000 pounds of pet food throughout the community.
Watch for our Community Giveback Days, where we offer pet food and supplies to the community right from our Princeton facility.
Rather than regularly distributing pet food directly from our facility, Ruff Start works with local food shelves to help get supplies closer to the families who need them.
We routinely provide pet food and supplies to partners including Princeton Pantry in Princeton and CAER Food Shelf in Elk River and others. If you need pet food assistance, we encourage you to check with your local food shelf. Even if pet food is not prominently listed among its services, supplies may be available when donations allow. If your local food shelf is in need of pet food to offer their community, we encourage them to reach out to us.
Additional organizations throughout the area may also be able to help with pet food and supplies. Explore the resources below to find options that may be available near you.
Provides pet food assistance to Minneapolis residents, as well as people experiencing homelessness or without a permanent address. Limited assistance may also be available to those living outside Minneapolis.
Provides pet food and supplies to community members. Assistance is not limited to North Minneapolis residents.
Many humane societies and rescues will gladly part with excess pet food if they know members of their community need it. Contact your local humane society to see if they can help.
Accessible veterinary care can make an enormous difference for pets and their families.
Ruff Start Rescue’s community wellness clinics help connect pet owners with essential preventative care and resources designed to keep animals healthy and at home. Clinic offerings vary, but may include vaccinations, preventive care, microchipping, and other basic wellness services for dogs and cats. These are offered in Princeton or Zimmerman, MN at this time.
Spaying and neutering can help prevent unwanted litters and reduce overpopulation, and provide health and behavioral benefits, while vaccinations help protect both pets and the broader animal population from preventable illness.
We do not currently offer surgical services to public pets, but we hope to in the future. We’ve gathered local organizations and programs that may offer lower-cost spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and other veterinary care.
Pet owners may need help for many different reasons. While Ruff Start cannot provide every service directly, our Resource Center includes trusted information and organizations that may be able to help with needs such as:
Community support is an important part of Ruff Start Rescue’s work. In addition to helping animals who enter our foster program, we work to strengthen the network of support available to pets and families throughout Minnesota, with a particular commitment to the rural communities where Ruff Start began.
By sharing donated food and supplies, connecting families with veterinary resources, offering community programming, and partnering with local organizations, we can help expand access to care and keep more pets with the people who love them, even when those animals never enter our rescue.
For us, success isn’t only measured by how many animals we rescue. It’s also reflected in the pets who are able to remain healthy, safe, and loved in the homes they already have.
We know the need for accessible pet care and community support is greater than what Ruff Start Rescue can meet today. As funding and partnerships grow, we hope to expand services such as spay/neuter assistance, pet food access, TNR support and low-cost veterinary care.
These are goals we can only reach with the support of donors and community partners who believe in helping pets stay healthy, safe, and with the people who love them.
If you’re interested in helping Ruff Start turn these ideas into reality, we’d love to hear from you.
