Foster

Your home can be their fresh start. Fostering gives animals the safety, comfort, and personalized care they need while they wait for adoption. When you open your home to a rescue pet, you help them take the next step toward a brighter future and create space for another animal in need.

By fostering, you’re not just changing one life. You’re helping more animals get the care, support, and second chance they deserve.

Why Foster With Us?

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, and foster homes are at the heart of our lifesaving work. Every available foster home helps create opportunities for animals waiting in overcrowded shelters to enter rescue and begin their journey toward adoption.

Foster care offers more than a temporary place to stay. By caring for animals in a home environment, foster volunteers help us:

  • Learn an animal’s unique personality and behavior
  • Understand their routines, preferences, and individual needs
  • Identify the type of home where they’ll thrive
  • Share meaningful insights with potential adopters
  • Create successful, lasting matches between pets and families

While some cats and critters may spend time in adoption centers or other care settings, foster homes provide comfort, stability, and individualized attention that help prepare animals for successful adoptions.

Through the care and insight foster families provide, Ruff Start can help animals find homes where they’re more likely to thrive.

Every Foster Home Opens a Door

As a foster-based rescue, our ability to help animals depends on the homes available to care for them. By becoming a foster, you create that opportunity for an animal in need and help Ruff Start extend its reach to even more pets waiting for care.

Foster Opportunities

Whether you’re looking for a short-term commitment, a longer-term placement, or even a foster-to-adopt opportunity, we have options to fit a variety of homes, schedules, and experience levels.

Standard Foster Care

Standard foster homes provide care for animals while they wait for adoption. The length of a foster placement varies based on the animal’s needs and adoption timeline. Our team works with foster volunteers to find placements that fit their household, lifestyle, and availability

Temporary Foster Care

Temporary foster homes provide short-term care for a defined period when a longer-term foster is unavailable, an animal is transitioning between placements, or even if their standard foster is on vacation. This option is ideal for volunteers who want to help but may not be able to commit to an extended foster stay.

Foster-to-Adopt

This program allows approved adopters to foster an animal before finalizing the adoption, helping both the pet and family determine if it’s the right fit. Foster-to-adopt placements are considered on a case-by-case basis based on the animal’s needs. Through foster-to-adopt, you can get to know your potential new family member while providing them with a safe, loving home. Learn more about this program here.

How Fostering Works

When you foster with Ruff Start Rescue, we’ll provide the support you need to help an animal thrive. We cover food, supplies, and approved veterinary care, while foster volunteers provide the day-to-day care that helps animals feel safe, comfortable, and ready for adoption.

Foster Responsibilities

As a foster volunteer, you’ll help by:

  • Providing a safe, loving home
  • Feeding, exercising, and caring for your foster animal
  • Transporting your foster animal to veterinary appointments when needed (typically at our Princeton
    facility)
  • Sharing photos, updates, and insights about their personality, routines, and progress

Every foster experience is different, and each one plays an important role in preparing animals for their future homes. Whether you foster for a few days, a few weeks, or longer, your impact is significant and deeply appreciated.

Veterinary Care Is Always Covered

Ruff Start Rescue covers all approved veterinary care for animals in foster, including:

  • Vaccinations
  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Microchipping
  • Diagnostic testing and treatment
  • Preventative care

Foster volunteers are never responsible for approved veterinary expenses for their foster animals. Our team works closely with fosters to coordinate care and ensure animals receive the medical attention they need.

Ready to Foster?

Opening your home to a foster animal is one of the most impactful ways you can help save lives. While every foster experience is unique, successful fosters share a commitment to providing a safe, patient, and loving environment while an animal prepares for adoption.

To foster with Ruff Start Rescue, you should:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to provide a safe indoor environment for your foster animal
  • Provide daily care, including feeding, exercise, medication (if needed), and companionship
  • Be willing to transport your foster animal to veterinary appointments when needed
  • Approach your foster animal with patience, consistency, and understanding, especially as they are adjusting to a new environment and/or recovering from a difficult past
  • Understand that adoption timelines vary and there is no guaranteed length of stay

For the safety of everyone involved, we strongly recommend that resident pets are spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations. Foster animals should always be safely leashed or secured when outdoors and carefully supervised in new environments.
