Sapa is a dog with the best of both worlds: he’s got that adorable, playful and fun puppy energy and he’s potty trained, amazingly kennel-trained, knows several commands and wants to please his people.

Okay, at about 5 months old, Sapa does still have some puppy mischievousness and needs more training, but truly, this is one crazy, beautiful, fantastic dog.

Sapa was from the Pine Ridge reservation and he lived up to the “ruff start.” He came dirty and sick and has made an incredible recovery. At 30 pounds and lanky, Sapa is healthy, strong, and literally prances when he walks. He’s likely got some German Shepard and maybe some terrier in his mix. He’s got so much enthusiasm for life and loves his people so much! He would do best with someone who could spend a lot of time with him to satisfy this loyal companion.  He is a huge snuggler—he gets sleepy and cuddly and quiet and could sit in your lap all morning or evening.

Sapa means “black” in the Lakota language as a nod to his origins. He is pure delight, and also really smart, patient and can be gentle. We are excited to find someone to love him and give him the attention and care that he will give right back. Sapa does have a high prey drive and while he is learning to leave the bunnies and squirrels, he will go after our separated cats, probably to play, but we haven’t tested that theory. A home without cats will probably be best. Not sure how he’ll do up close with other dogs—he is very curious in passing and his behavior is playful and curious but never aggressive. And he hasn’t been around small children, but does really well with teenagers. He is an incredibly friendly guy, even with strangers.

Come and meet Sapa—but be ready to fall in love. This is an usually wonderful dog.
