Director of Development
Pamela Nelson became director of development at Ruff Start Rescue® in February 2019 after relocating to the Twin Cities area from Iowa. Prior to joining Ruff Start®, Pam worked in the nonprofit arts field, primarily at the Des Moines Symphony & Academy in Des Moines, Iowa, where she held several positions including manager of member and donor relations, interim development director and development manager.
In her role as director of development, Pam is responsible for overseeing all contributed revenue to the rescue. This includes the annual fund, fundraising events, grant writing, major gifts, corporate sponsorships and planned gifts. Additionally, her team manages Ruff Start’s merchandise.
Pam received a Bachelor’s of Music from Drake University, along with minors in general business and human resource management. After graduating, she attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida and holds a Master’s of Arts in Arts Administration.
Growing up in rural Central Iowa, Pam was constantly surrounded by animals, whether it was her own dog (Sadie, a 130-pound German Shepard mix), friends’ cats and dogs, family friends’ farm animals like goats, cows and horses, or the random animals she would find while hiking with friends (deer, snakes, mice, foxes).
Pam lives in Brooklyn Center with her husband, Craig, daughter, Gemma, and their two rescue pups: coonhound/retriever Chip and sheltie Bowen. In her spare time, you can find Pam baking, exploring the Twin Cities and fishing with her family.
