Swift is an adorable pup with a playful spirit, an adventurous streak, and a whole lot of love for the people he trusts.

Once Swift considers you one of his people, he is incredibly affectionate. He loves being close to his family, snuggling up for naps, following his favorite people around the house, and joining them for whatever adventure comes next. He’s a great car companion and loves getting outside for nature walks, cabin trips, and anything involving water. He’s even confidently hopped onto a paddleboard and loves exploring the shoreline!

At home, Swift is a fun mix of puppy energy and champion napper. He enjoys soccer balls, stuffies, zoomies, and hanging out with his people. He’s still figuring out fetch, but he’s very confident that possessing the ball is the most important part.

Swift has also been making great progress with his puppy basics. His potty accidents have decreased significantly when he is kept on a consistent routine, and he’s currently learning to use a bell to ask to go outside. His kennel training has come a long way too. He now goes into his kennel willingly for special treats, may protest for a few minutes, and then settles. Like many young dogs, consistency and predictable routines help him succeed.

The biggest area where Swift still needs support is confidence around unfamiliar people. Swift is very loving with the people he knows, but strangers make him nervous. He is generally comfortable passing people on walks when he has space, but he does not currently want unfamiliar people approaching, reaching toward, or petting him.

Because Swift’s signs of discomfort can sometimes be subtle, his future family will need to be comfortable advocating for his space and learning his body language. He should not be expected to greet strangers right now. Instead, he’ll benefit from calm, controlled exposure where he can observe people from a distance without being pressured to interact.

Swift would likely benefit greatly from living with a friendly, confident, established dog who can help show him that the world isn’t such a scary place. A patient home willing to continue positive-reinforcement training and let relationships develop at Swift’s pace would be ideal.

There is so much to love about this sensitive little guy. With his trusted people, Swift is affectionate, goofy, curious, and eager to explore. He doesn’t need someone to force him to be brave. He needs someone who will give him the security and guidance to discover that bravery on his own.

If you’re looking for an adventurous young dog and enjoy helping a sensitive pup build confidence, Swift may be a very rewarding companion.

*Rescue puppies are notorious for losing their birth certificates before entering our rescue. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.*

NOTE ABOUT BREED LABELING: Visual breed identification of dogs is unreliable and usually inaccurate. So, for most of our adoptable pups, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog or puppy as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Please read the following general requirements carefully before submitting an adoption application. While this criteria is our typical standard, we understand all situations are unique! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel you meet one of these bullet points – feel free to submit an application anyway, so we can discuss your situation with you.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Submitted applications must be filled out fully and factually.
  • All applicants must reside in the state of Minnesota or its bordering states, unless a special exception has been made. Please email us at info@ruffstartrescue.org if you would like to discuss the potential for an out of state adoption.
  • Consider how you’ll manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. An isolation period would be good for allowing that animal to settle in and learn the routine.
  • Please be aware of any rental/association or homeowners’ insurance restrictions you may have before applying. Such limits may include breed restrictions, number of pets allowed, weight requirements, etc.
  • All adopted animals must live indoors with their families and always be monitored closely when outdoors for their safety (with the exception of working cats).
  • We do not allow any medically-unnecessary surgical procedures, such as declawing; defanging; debarking; or cropping/docking (of tails or ears) to be conducted on any animal adopted from our rescue.
