Meet Perry! 🐾 Perry is a fun-sized Shepherd with a BIG personality and a battery that apparently lasts forever! 🔋 He is incredibly smart, athletic, eager to please, and ALWAYS ready for his next adventure.

Perry needs an active person who will exercise his body AND his brain. A quick yard romp? “That’s a great start.” Seven-mile walk? Perry: “Is that all you got?” 😂 He LOVES his Kongs and will happily chase, bounce, catch, and retrieve one until you’re ready to retire your throwing arm.

He is also a seriously talented athlete. Throw baseballs? Perry will chase them down. Want to work on your batting average? Perry’s your guy. ⚾️

Perry is house-trained, knows “sit” and “stay,” learns quickly, and sleeps quietly in his kennel. He’s still working on leash and house manners—think pulling at the beginning of walks, counter surfing, and occasional Perry-powered zoomies through the house. Obedience classes, agility, and other activities would be a great way to give this smart guy a job and strengthen his bond with his person.

Perry is fairly independent and isn’t looking for a constant lap to sit on. He’s happy to be your adventure buddy! He can be excited when visitors arrive and may bark or jump, but settles once he gets to know you. He’s been respectful of older adults and does well around dogs who respect his personal space. Cats are an unknown. Because he’s energetic enough to accidentally become a human bowling ball, older kids would be the better fit.

Perry is a happy-go-lucky guy who isn’t easily rattled. Loud noises? No big deal. Frozen Kong in his kennel? Now THAT’S a big deal. 😂

One thing to know: Perry is a serious chewer, so stuffies are definitely not invited to this party. Black Kongs are his jam!

If you’re looking for a dog who will keep you active, challenge your brain, make you laugh, and ensure you never wonder what to do with your free time again—Perry would like to report for duty. Rain or shine, this boy is READY. 🐕💨
 

NOTE ABOUT BREED LABELING: Visual breed identification of dogs is unreliable and usually inaccurate. So, for most of our adoptable pups, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog or puppy as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Please read the following general requirements carefully before submitting an adoption application. While this criteria is our typical standard, we understand all situations are unique! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel you meet one of these bullet points – feel free to submit an application anyway, so we can discuss your situation with you.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Submitted applications must be filled out fully and factually.
  • All applicants must reside in the state of Minnesota or its bordering states, unless a special exception has been made. Please email us at info@ruffstartrescue.org if you would like to discuss the potential for an out of state adoption.
  • Consider how you’ll manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. An isolation period would be good for allowing that animal to settle in and learn the routine.
  • Please be aware of any rental/association or homeowners’ insurance restrictions you may have before applying. Such limits may include breed restrictions, number of pets allowed, weight requirements, etc.
  • All adopted animals must live indoors with their families and always be monitored closely when outdoors for their safety (with the exception of working cats).
  • We do not allow any medically-unnecessary surgical procedures, such as declawing; defanging; debarking; or cropping/docking (of tails or ears) to be conducted on any animal adopted from our rescue.
