Meet Mercury! Mercury may be a little shy when you first meet her, but don’t let that quiet first impression fool you—once she gets to know you, this sweet girl absolutely loves attention! She’ll happily soak up cheek and chin scratches and may even come running when she sees you because she knows it’s petting time. She’s a super sweet girl who truly loves her people.

Mercury is also a curious little explorer who loves keeping tabs on everything happening around the house. She enjoys climbing to new heights, checking out the view from the window, and investigating anything interesting that catches her attention.

One of Mercury’s funniest quirks? Her fascination with water! She loves supervising dish duty, climbing into the sink, and has been known to stick her paws—and even her head—into unattended glasses of water. She hasn’t quite figured out that running water can be a toy yet, but we have a feeling it’s only a matter of time!

Mercury would do best in a patient home that will give her a little time to warm up and build trust. She also definitely wants a feline friend—Mercury is not looking to be an only cat! Once she feels comfortable, her sweet and affectionate personality really shines, and she’ll be happy to show you just how much she loves being your girl.

Want to adopt a kitten? We highly recommend you consider bringing home two instead of one! Adopting kittens in pairs has been proven to be beneficial for cats’ emotional and behavioral well-being and greatly improves the likelihood of long-term adopter happiness as a result. Adopting more than one kitten also reduces the risk of “Single Kitten Syndrome” (also known as Tarzan Syndrome), a symptom of under-socialization during a kitten’s most formative weeks. Kittens who are under-socialized may develop aggressive tendencies toward both other animals and humans as they grow, creating lifelong behavioral issues for owners.

NOTE ABOUT BREED LABELING: Visual breed identification of dogs is unreliable and usually inaccurate. So, for most of our adoptable pups, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog or puppy as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Please read the following general requirements carefully before submitting an adoption application. While this criteria is our typical standard, we understand all situations are unique! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel you meet one of these bullet points – feel free to submit an application anyway, so we can discuss your situation with you.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Submitted applications must be filled out fully and factually.
  • All applicants must reside in the state of Minnesota or its bordering states, unless a special exception has been made. Please email us at info@ruffstartrescue.org if you would like to discuss the potential for an out of state adoption.
  • Consider how you’ll manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. An isolation period would be good for allowing that animal to settle in and learn the routine.
  • Please be aware of any rental/association or homeowners’ insurance restrictions you may have before applying. Such limits may include breed restrictions, number of pets allowed, weight requirements, etc.
  • All adopted animals must live indoors with their families and always be monitored closely when outdoors for their safety (with the exception of working cats).
  • We do not allow any medically-unnecessary surgical procedures, such as declawing; defanging; debarking; or cropping/docking (of tails or ears) to be conducted on any animal adopted from our rescue.
