Buddy is an 85-pound bundle of love who has discovered that the very best part of life is simply being with his people.

Over the past few months in foster care, Buddy has blossomed into a wonderfully well-mannered companion. Before coming into rescue, life may not have offered him much structure, but he’s embraced his new routine with enthusiasm. He’s crate trained, happily sleeps through the night in his crate, and will often tuck himself in for a nap because it’s become his favorite safe space. He’s also learned his manners, politely sitting and waiting for meals and taking treats with the gentlest touch.

Buddy may be a big guy, but don’t let his size fool you—he still gets the cutest little bursts of zoomies! They usually last about five and a half seconds before he’s ready to return to his favorite activity: relaxing beside his favorite humans. Give him a comfy spot, a good bone to chew on, and a movie to watch with you, and he’s convinced life couldn’t get any better.

If you’re looking for a Velcro dog, Buddy is your guy. He loves being wherever you are, whether that’s hanging out in the backyard, lounging on the couch, or following you from room to room just to keep you company. He still believes he’s a lap dog despite his size and has never met a person he didn’t want to shower with kisses. In Buddy’s world, there’s no such thing as too much affection!

Buddy enjoys chewing on sturdy bones and Nylabones, and his goofy personality still shines through during playtime. Thanks to consistent guidance and structure, he’s learned so much and continues to show just how intelligent and eager to please he is.

Buddy is looking for a home where he can be your one and only pet. He has a high prey drive, so a home without cats or other small animals is a must, and he’d be happiest as the only dog where he doesn’t have to share his favorite people. In return, you’ll have a loyal best friend who’s completely devoted to you.

Buddy has the perfect balance of playful and peaceful. He’s old enough to appreciate a quiet evening at home but still young enough to enjoy outdoor adventures and make you laugh with his goofy antics. If you’re searching for a faithful companion who wants nothing more than to love you with his whole heart, Buddy is ready to spend the rest of his life by your side.

NOTE ABOUT BREED LABELING: Visual breed identification of dogs is unreliable and usually inaccurate. So, for most of our adoptable pups, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog or puppy as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Please read the following general requirements carefully before submitting an adoption application. While this criteria is our typical standard, we understand all situations are unique! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel you meet one of these bullet points – feel free to submit an application anyway, so we can discuss your situation with you.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Submitted applications must be filled out fully and factually.
  • All applicants must reside in the state of Minnesota or its bordering states, unless a special exception has been made. Please email us at info@ruffstartrescue.org if you would like to discuss the potential for an out of state adoption.
  • Consider how you’ll manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. An isolation period would be good for allowing that animal to settle in and learn the routine.
  • Please be aware of any rental/association or homeowners’ insurance restrictions you may have before applying. Such limits may include breed restrictions, number of pets allowed, weight requirements, etc.
  • All adopted animals must live indoors with their families and always be monitored closely when outdoors for their safety (with the exception of working cats).
  • We do not allow any medically-unnecessary surgical procedures, such as declawing; defanging; debarking; or cropping/docking (of tails or ears) to be conducted on any animal adopted from our rescue.
