The Story of Belah

Fate brought little Belah to Ruff Start Rescue.
Our team recently visited a shelter in northern Minnesota with the plan to help cats. Cats were the mission… until we met Belah.
This sweet little pup was in a big kennel surrounded by loud, barking dogs—pure chaos. But there she was, sitting quietly, smiling through it all. At that moment, we were hooked. We quickly shifted gears, loaded up the cats, and sent out an urgent plea to our foster families for help with Belah. Within minutes, someone stepped up to give her the chance she deserved.
It was immediately clear that Belah had some significant deformities. We weren’t sure what the future held, but after a vet visit, we learned that she has severe angular limb deformity in her left front leg and carpal hyperextension in her right front leg. Likely caused by birth defects or a past injury, her condition isn’t painful, but it does cause some instability. Fortunately, Belah is a trooper, and after starting physical therapy, she’s on the path to recovery with the possibility of a custom brace.
Despite her challenges, Belah is an absolute joy! At 3 months old, she’s potty-trained, crate-trained, and stays quiet while crated. Her sweet, goofy personality shines every day, and she’s always ready to cuddle and play. Belah is working hard to strengthen her legs, and she wears a soft splint during walks and playtime to help her along. Her foster family is supporting her every step of the way, helping her avoid any rough play and jump-free adventures while her legs heal.
Belah needs a foster to adopt family who will continue to support her recovery—keeping her on leash outdoors and helping her stay calm during her rehab journey. She’s ready to find a home that will give her the love, care, and patience she needs to thrive.
