The Story of China
China’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and now, she’s finally on the path to a better life.
Originally from North Carolina, China was rescued by Caldwell County Animal Care and Enforcement in early September from a horrific cruelty case. She was found living in overcrowded, filthy conditions—60 animals stacked in cages in a 960-square-foot home. With the agency overwhelmed, the Humane Society of the United States stepped in to help transport and care for the animals rescued from the situation.
China was brought to an HSUS care center in Maryland and then transferred to Ruff Start Rescue in mid-October as part of our hurricane relief efforts. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that China had been suffering from serious knee pain. After a veterinary examination at Granite City, it was determined that China has torn ACLs in both knees, requiring surgery to the tune of $3,000. The procedure will take place on November 26th.
Even with her medical challenges, China’s spirit is unbreakable. After a short time in foster care, China met her future family, who are fostering to adopt her while she undergoes treatment. Now named “Willow,” she is settling into her new home where she is showered with love and care.
Willow is an active, loving dog who is always by her family’s side. Despite being in constant pain, she has adapted and is learning to take things slow, with help from her dedicated foster family. They lovingly lift her onto the couch, into the car, and onto the bed, doing everything they can to keep her comfortable while she waits for surgery and physical therapy. Willow’s family is deeply committed to her healing process, and they’re so excited to have her as part of their lives.
Willow’s story is just one example of the many animals we care for at Ruff Start Rescue. Thanks to the $700,000 we spend annually on veterinary care, animals like Willow receive the treatment they need to thrive and find their new homes.
