April is Heartworm Awareness Month
Did you know that Ruff Start Rescue saves animals with heartworm disease?
This disease is caused by a parasitic worm and is spread by the bite of a mosquito. It is very prevalent in southern states. Once an animal is infected, it can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, organ failure, and even death.
Not every animal welfare organization can save heartworm-infected animals, whether from a lack of funds or their state doesn’t allow these animals to cross state lines. Fortunately, thanks to your support, we can say YES to taking in and treating hundreds of dogs, and this year is no exception. In the first quarter alone, 43 Ruff Start dogs have completed treatment, and many others are undergoing care. In 2022, we were able to provide treatment to 100 dogs who otherwise may not have been able to survive.
If you can, please donate to help cover heartworm treatment costs so we can continue to do whatever it takes to help these animals that need us most. $150 will cover one dog’s heartworm treatment at Ruff Start Rescue.
